Richard K. Ohrbach, DDS, PhD, is a well-versed researcher, professor, dentist, and pain expert who serves as Associate Professor specializing in clinical psychology and temporomandibular disorders in the Department of Oral Diagnostic Sciences at University at Buffalo SUNY School of Medicine in Buffalo, New York, a position he assumed in 2000. Furthermore, he is part of the Center for Orofacial Pain Research at the University at Buffalo SUNY School of Medicine. “Our research group focuses on a number of intersecting questions, which revolve around pain, function, diagnosis, and classification”, states the official website of the center. Richard K. Ohrbach, DDS, PhD, attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and was awarded his doctorate of dental surgery in 1977. He is fellowship trained in the division of gnathology and occlusion at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he also performed a pain research fellowship (1986). Furthermore, he completed a fellowship at Meikai University in Japan (1989) and a fellowship at the University at Buffalo (1994). Dr. Ohrbach received a master degree of science in oral sciences from SUNY at Buffalo School of Medicine (1989) complemented by his PhD in clinical psychology acquired at the same educational venue in 1996. He subsequently did an internship in clinical psychology at the University of Washington, Department Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, School of Medicine, in 1996, and was a postdoctoral fellow in behavioral epidemiology at the University of Washington, Department of Dental Public Health Sciences, School of Dentistry in 1997. Prior to dental school, Dr. Ohrbach obtained a BS degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1974. Professional memberships include the New York Academy of Sciences (1998), the Association of University Teachers of Orofacial Pain Programs (1989), the American Pain Society (1988), the Neuroscience Group – IADR (1987), the American Association for Dental Research (1987), and the International Association for the Study of Pain (1984). He authored over 120 publications and feels that he owes his success to having excellent colleagues in research. He spends his spare time enjoying skiing and biking.
